Chelsea confirm Frank Lampard as new interim manager - Averaged 1.75 points in first spell

In a statement on the club website, the Premier League side confirmed that the former Chelsea player and manager would be taking over on an interim basis for Graham Potter, who was released by owner Todd Boehly on the weekend.

Lampard has previously coached Chelsea between July 2019 and January 2021 before being replaced by Thomas Tuchel. Lampard averaged 1.75 points per game during his first spell at the club. The spell at Chelsea had both highs and lows. Lampard successfully navigated the club to a top-four finish during his first season with the club—a campaign that was also interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The young manager then struggled during his second season and was eventually replaced by Tuchel, who would go on and win the Champions League. 

After leaving Chelsea, Lampard joined Everton, where he was in charge from January 2022 until January 2023. At Everton, Lampard averaged just 0.75 points per game in 20 Premier League games this season. With just three wins in 20 games, Lampard's side struggled, and Everton quickly found themselves in relegation troubles, where the club remains to this point. 

Lampard to Chelsea - Stopgap for Nagelsmann or Enrique? 

Chelsea hope to buy some time by appointing Lampard now. Transfermarkt understands that other candidates like Julian Nagelsmann would not necessarily have been available this season. While Nagelsmann is interested in the Chelsea project, his tendency is to take time off until the end of the current campaign. Luis Enrique has been another candidate to emerge today but Chelsea feel that they still need time to evaluate the club's direction before rushing into making a appointment.
