Kamal Miller joins Inter Miami CF from Montréal - Bryce Duke & Ariel Lassiter go the other way
CF Montréal have traded Canadian men's national team player Kamal Miller to league rivals Inter Miami CF. Both clubs announced the deal on Wednesday. The trade can be only described as a blockbuster deal and also involves Inter Miami CF midfielder Bryce Duke and winger Ariel Lassiter. Both those players are headed the other way to Montréal. Furthermore, Inter Miami will receive an additional $1.3 million (€1.18m) in General Allocation Money (GAM) from Montréal. Montréal, in turn, will retain a sell-on percentage for Miller.
“Kamal is a standout defender who’s just entering his prime. He’s improved every year of his career and become one of the league’s best players at his position," Inter Miami sporting director Chris Henderson said in a club statement. "He has also excelled on the international stage, including at the biggest stage in the World Cup. Additionally, this trade gives us the flexibility to continue making exciting moves in the near future and further strengthen our squad. Bryce and Ariel both made tremendous strides with the Club, and we’re proud to have helped them along the way. We’re grateful to them for everything they did as members of our Club and wish them well moving forward.”
Perhaps the most surprising part of the deal is that Inter Miami received both Miller and $1.3m in GAM from Montréal. That indicates that Lassiter and, in particular, Duke, are the real price assets in this deal. Inter Miami acquired Duke from LAFC last offseason, and the 22-year-old midfielder has made a tremendous step forward in his development, seeing his market value grow from €300,000 to €1.8m. Transfermarkt understands that there is a significant market for Duke abroad, and it would explain the GAM portion of the trade.
Kamal Miller wanted Europe transfer - A short-term fix at Inter Miami CF?
Miller too has sparked interest from Europe. The 25-year-old center-back, in fact, wanted to leave Montréal last winter, but a move never materialized for Miller. The focus is now on a potential transfer in the summer, which could mean that Miller, who is one of the most valuable center-backs in MLS, will not be in Miami for long. There is certainly a market for the 32-times CanMNT player, with teams in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany interested. That too, could explain an immediate trade to a league rival, especially as Montréal have secured their future by receiving a percentage of any potential Miller transfer to a European club.
